Mysterious 'help' signs spotted in Los Angeles on Google Earth

Someone has seemingly been writing the word 'help' on the ground over and over again.
When eagle-eyed Google Earth users shared screenshots on social media showing the world 'help' etched into the ground of a vacant lot in Los Angeles recently, the mystery quickly racked up millions of views and left many wondering if someone might be in urgent need of assistance.

There wasn't just one 'help' sign on the ground, either - there seemed to be dozens of them all written in different sizes and orientations over quite a sizable area of open ground.

The enigma prompted calls to the local police who headed to the site to investigate.

"Upon arrival, officers conducted a thorough investigation and found no evidence of any criminal activity or threat in the area," a spokesperson told The LA Times.

Although the police maintained that the photographs were from 2023, when local news station KTLA sent a chopper out to take a look they discovered that the 'help' signs were all still there.
Keen to get to the bottom of the mystery, some social media users actually ventured out to investigate the area themselves and discovered that quite a few homeless people were living there.

After speaking to a few of them, they determined that a homeless man named Jose had been writing the signs on the ground for several years.

It turned out that the police were quite familiar with him too.

"We've had several different contacts with the individual you speak of. He has refused housing or a mental health evaluation," the LAPD Central Division wrote.

"There is no evidence of Human Trafficking. He has been at the location for a few years."

It's still an interesting story, though - and some people may have heard of this but didn't know what the explanation was.

",,,and left many wondering if someone might be in urgent need of assistance." Nothing says urgent like repeatedly etching the word "help" for several years

Just an FYI, the chances of creating any sign for Google Earth and them showing up right away, short of knowing exactly when Google was going to update your location on Maps, is quite rare. Despite constant updating, any spot on Earth could have images up to 3 years out of date, which is, by Googles own admission, about how long it takes for everywhere to be updated. I remember it taking a couple years before my new car began showing on G-Earth.

I rather like the story that he’s looking for a lost pet dog - this is the sort of passion a pet engenders.  Sadly … given that some of the smaller messages allude to people trafficking I doubt it’s about a pet dog.
