The mysterious facility was rocked by reports of an earthquake centered a few miles away from the base.
Situated around 83 miles north-west of Las Vegas in the Nevada desert, Area 51 is the world's most famous 'secret' base - a place that has become synonymous over the years with stories of reverse-engineered alien technology and UFO-related black projects.
It wasn't until 2013 when declassified CIA files were published that the US Air Force officially acknowledged that Area 51, which is part of the Nevada Test and Training Range, even existed at all.
Even today, exactly what goes on there remains shrouded in secrecy.
This week, the base became the focus of renewed attention following reports of seismic activity within its vicinity, prompting conspiracy theorists to speculate on whether or not this could be related to what's going on inside.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 2.8 magnitude quake - which was felt in Las Vegas - was centered around 32 miles southeast of Beatty (or 60 miles from the base).
It occurred at 2:11 a.m. PST on Monday.
In all likelihood, especially given how seismically active Nevada actually is, this particular earthquake was almost certainly the result of natural tectonic movements.
"Earthquakes in Western Nevada are caused by the extension that is pulling Nevada apart and wrenching created as the Sierra Nevada is pulled to the north because it is caught up in the Pacific-North America plate motion," the earthquake drill website
Shakeout explains.
In other words - no secretive conspiratorial explanations this time.
Or at least, that's what they want you to think...
