Egyptian officials have revealed the discovery of the tomb of King Thutmose II near to the Valley of Kings.
The find, which is being hailed as the first of its kind since the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb all the way back in 1922, was made by a joint Egyptian-British archaeological mission west of Luxor.
It is the last of the lost tombs of the kings of ancient Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty, which reigned for a period of over 200 years between 1550 BC and 1292 BC.
The entrance and main corridor of the tomb, which had previously been designated 'Tomb C4', had been unearthed in 2022, but it had taken until now to confirm who the tomb had belonged to.
Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, has hailed the find as one of the most significant archaeological breakthroughs in recent years, while noting that relics found within the tomb are expected to provide "critical insights into the history of the region and the reign of Thutmose II."
Such artifacts include alabaster vessels with inscriptions bearing the name of King Thutmose II - the first funerary items related to this particular pharaoh ever found.
"Dr. Piers Latherland, head of the British side of the mission, noted that the tomb's simple architectural design served as a prototype for later royal tombs of the 18th Dynasty," the press release states.
"It features a plastered corridor leading to the burial chamber, with the floor of the corridor elevated approximately 1.4 meters above the burial chamber's floor. "
"Dr. Latherland added that the mission, which has been conducting archaeological surveys at the site for two years, will continue its work to uncover more secrets of the area and locate the final resting place of the tomb's original contents."
