Five members of the same family went missing after going to pick up a Christmas tree almost 70 years ago.
It was one of the most tragic and mysterious disappearances of the 1950s - Ken and Barbara Martin, along with their three young daughters, had driven to pick up a Christmas tree on December 7th, 1958 when they failed to return home, sparking extensive news coverage and a major search operation.
There was no evidence at their home to suggest that they had intended not to return as the dishes were still in the sink, laundry was in the washing machine and the girls' comic books were still scattered around - it seemed as though the family didn't think they would be gone long.
Police traced the family's movements to a gas station near the Columbia river, but were unable to determine exactly where they had gone after that or what had happened to them.
Sadly, five months later, things took a tragic turn when the body of one of the girls was found in the river, followed by the body of another the day after that.
It wasn't until autumn of last year, however, that the final, definitive clue in the mystery would reveal itself in the form of the family's station wagon that was lifted from the river after two days of dredging.
It didn't take police investigators long to confirm that the vehicle was a match.
It appeared as though, for whatever reason, the family's car had plummeted into the river at some point during their ill-fated trip in 1958, resulting in the deaths of everyone on board.
The only family member to survive was the couple's older son who hadn't gone on the trip.
While the discovery finally brings a close to this long-enduring mystery, it marks a sad and tragic end to the story of a young family who lost their lives during an innocent trip out at Christmas time.
