The problem has become so bad that the unidentified stink has been waking people up in the middle of the night.
Residents of the town of Calne in Wiltshire are at the end of their tether due to a pungent smell - described as being similar to gas or eggs - that has been plaguing their lives for weeks.

To make matters worse, local authorities have been unable to determine what's causing it.

"It smells like you've been cooking with gas but haven't lit the gas," said Christa Phillips - owner of a local haberdashery and craft shop. "I have checked - we haven't got any gas in the building."

"Other times a rural smell, a bit more eggy, that one I can cope with."

The phenomenon is said to be intermittent, giving residents at least some respite from the stench.
Local water company Wessex Water has stated that it has been unable to find anything amiss.

"We've carried out odor assessments at our sewerage assets, which are operating normally, and offered to meet with representatives of Wiltshire Council to help with their investigations," the company wrote.

While some residents had suspected that a nearby landfill may be the source of the smell, a local councillor who has since investigated the site has insisted that it is not to blame.

As things stand, local authorities are continuing to investigate the phenomenon.

So far, no explanation for the stench has been found.

This is not uncommon globally and in many cases the cause is never discovered. In these cases when no other explanation can be made, it is usually written off to naturally occurring methane deposits that seep out of the ground. In this case I suspect that they have possibly researched that particular possibility due to the smell of EGGS. However, even with that said, there is guaranteed that the source will ever be found. One thing is for certain, something like that will decrease property values across the area. I have no source just my thoughts on the subject.

When the prevailing wind is clockwise over the North Sea the south of England gets the air from across Denmark: the thick aroma of pig-$h!t.  I don't know or care where that stench goes the rest of the year.  This story sounds more localised: someone burning rubbish at night, or pikeys burning cables to get at the copper, gives off choking fumes.

You know a smell is strong when it leaves a pasty film on your teeth after breathing it in. For me, there is nothing worse then the smell of a decomposing human body, it’s just horrible.
