Residents across multiple states have been reporting strange clouds of fog with a 'chemical-like smell'.
Something strange has been hanging in the air over the last few days - that is, at least, according to a swathe of reports of a peculiar fog with seemingly unusual properties that has been sighted in multiple US states including parts of Texas, Wisconsin, Iowa, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Florida and Minnesota.
Some witnesses complained that the fog had triggered respiratory symptoms and was accompanied by a "burning, chemical-like smell" that left them feeling nauseous.
"Within about and hour, I kept sneezing over and over for about three hours, and my eyes were really puffy," said one woman who encountered the fog while filling her car with gas in Florida.
"I got very warm and I felt like I had a fever, and my stomach was cramping."
Similar experiences were reported in California and Kansas.
"Here in SoCal, unusual fog the last few days," wrote one resident.
"Strange smells, but I've been noticing the smell for months now, burns my nose. Seems like an all-out assault from the skies the last few days."
The phenomenon quickly went viral on social media, with thousands of users suggesting that the fog could be something sinister such as a secretive government experiment.
Incredibly, something like this actually did happen in 1950 when a project known as Operation Sea Spray saw large amounts of bacteria being intentionally sprayed over the San Francisco area to determine how vulnerable US cities were to biological weapons.
That said, it is extremely unlikely that anything like that is going on here.
Instead, in all likelihood, the fog is little more than a natural phenomenon that has been blown out of proportion by the propagation of conspiracy theories on social media.
