The eye-opening project could provide the world's first robot capable of growing and 'giving birth' to a human baby.
If ever there was a news story that makes it seem as though we are all living in an episode of
Black Mirror, it has to be this.
Guangzhou-based technology firm Kaiwa Technology is currently working on developing a humanoid robot with an artificial womb that can actually be used to gestate and deliver a baby.
The robot's 'womb' will be embedded in its abdomen to mimic a human mother, with nutrients fed to the growing fetus via a hose and a form of artificial amniotic fluid produced inside.
Incredibly, this seems to be a genuine product, with production expected to begin in 2026 and each robot will cost the equivalent of around $13,900.
The goal is to offer an alternative to those who can't or don't wish to undergo a natural pregnancy.
This idea was actually explored in the 2023 move
The Pod Generation in which a couple takes possession of their gestating baby that is kept inside an "egg" that eventually "hatches".
According to Kaiwa Technology founder Zhang Qifeng, the new robot was designed to be humanoid so that the fetus can grow in a way that is more natural than simply being grown in a static incubator.
Whether this whole idea will ever take off, however, remains to be seen.
