Thousands of people have disappeared within this unassuming region and now we might have an answer as to why.
There are few mysteries as enduring as the Bermuda Triangle - an expanse of ocean in the North Atlantic that spans the area between Florida, Bermuda and Puerto Rico.
Over the years, the region has become synonymous with the unexplained disappearances of ships and airplanes - often with no trace of them or their crews ever being found.
Now, in a recently resurfaced Channel 5 documentary entitled
The Bermuda Triangle Enigma, University of Southampton oceanographer Simon Boxall has put forward what he believes to be the most likely explanation for the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon: rogue waves.
There was a time when the idea that a sudden, disproportionately massive wave could appear out of the blue and sink an entire ship was little more than nautical folklore.
It wasn't until 1995, in fact, when a sudden huge wave sunk an oil-drilling platform off the coast of Norway, that the reality of these gargantuan, freak waves was brought into sharp focus.
The truth is that rogue waves can and do happen, but scientists still do not fully understand how or why.
According to Boxall, the region encompassing the Bermuda Triangle may be particularly prone to rogue waves due to its meteorological conditions.
Even if rogue waves did explain why ships have disappeared, however, it doesn't quite explain why aircraft have also vanished over the region.
Perhaps the true explanation is that multiple phenomena are at play at the same time.
The Bermuda Triangle Enigma is available to stream now in the UK on My5.
