Scientists have identified a strange structure beneath the region that is like nothing else found on Earth.
Best known for its stories of disappearing ships and planes, the Bermuda Triangle has now become the focus of a new geological mystery after the discovery of a never-before-seen 12.4-mile-thick layer of rock situated beneath its oceanic crust.
The finding is unique to the region and has left scientists scratching their heads.
The island of Bermuda has long been known to sit on a 'swell' where the crust is higher than its surroundings, despite a complete lack of volcanic activity that might help to explain it.
This has lead researchers to wonder if the two phenomena are related.
"Typically, you have the bottom of the oceanic crust and then it would be expected to be the mantle," said study lead author William Frazer.
"But in Bermuda, there is this other layer that is emplaced beneath the crust, within the tectonic plate that Bermuda sits on."
The true origins of this additional layer of rock may lie in the supercontinent Pangea which formed between 900 million and 300 million years ago.
"The fact that we are in an area that was previously the heart of the last supercontinent is, I think, part of the story of why this is unique," geologist Sarah Mazza told
Live Science.
Despite the Bermuda Triangle being a hotspot for disappearances and unexplained phenomena, it doesn't seem as though this particular feature is likely to be connected.
Exactly why this additional layer of rock exists here and nowhere else on Earth, however, will likely remain a topic of debate for years to come.
