Man who has been unable to sleep for 2 years is desperate for answers

A 32-year-old man from the UK suddenly found that he couldn't get to sleep and has been awake ever since.
In one of the most extreme cases of insomnia ever recorded, Oliver Alvis had been in good health until, one night two years ago, he found that he was unable to get off to sleep.

Far from being an isolated incident, it turned out that he wasn't able to sleep at all - no matter what - not even after taking strong sedatives.

He has since been on a journey to find some sort of solution to his problem.

"I don't just have a lack of sleep; it's the total disappearance of sleep," he told Mail Online.

"I don't feel sleepy. I don't fall asleep. I'm in a permanent state of alertness. Endless days turn into endless nights, and it's torment."

"The lack of sleep not only causes exhaustion, but it crumbles the spirit."
"I have lost almost everything. The person I once was is gone. How can it be that something so natural, so essential as sleep, is completely taken away from me?"

Due to the lack of sleep, the 32-year-old now suffers from extreme muscle pains, an endless sense of pressure in his head, impaired vision and an inability to even walk in a straight line.

He has described it as being like wearing an iron suit 24 hours a day.

Despite consulting numerous doctors, he has yet to find a solution.

"I wander around at night, envious of the homeless who can sleep on the porches of shops," he said.

"I would rather trade places with them, just to fall asleep - something I would trade all my possessions for."

Not sure if I believe this either.  I have read that extreme sleep deprivation causes serious mental issues and eventually death.   I get bouts of insomnia now and again, the longest I've gone without sleep is like 50 hours or so, I could barely function, let alone type replies on a website, or make extensive lists.  But, I am just a dude on the internet.....

Do you rest your eyes (by closing them for several hours)? Do you exercise, laugh, watch videos, read?   Any idea what may have caused the condition? Like a cold, the flu, another viral or bacterial infection? Did you previously have medical procedures? Like a transplant or a blood transfusion? Sexual intercourse? A kiss? Pets?

I’ve just had a look online, but the prevailing theory is that psychosis happens more often because of the other medications used (either to induce sleep or to keep the ‘subject’ awake) rather than any biological factor, and the main dangers seem to lie in falling asleep randomly.

You've not spent a full evening trying to watch TV whilst listening to mrs Stiff on the phone with any of her friends then. Actually, I'm pretty sure a few hours of that could probably help this poor guy fall asleep come to think about it.

Have u tried smoking pot lol   But nah seriously, sounds like it's a time to delve into the more reckless side of life. Injecting 10mg of 4meo changed my life for the better. Think of Limitless. Think of it.

In 1999 when I was first diagnosed for PTSD I didn’t sleep for six days. By the sixth day I was hallucinating, due to a lack of sleep. I personally don’t believe for a minute that the guy didn’t sleep in two years. I think this entire story has too many holes in it and it smells of BS.

I remember a project I had to write at Uni, pre-computers.  I worked on it all Saturday, throughout the night, into to Sunday evening.  Only about 40 hours but it totally bushwhacked me.  Friends tried to wake me that evening; apparently I sat on my bed giggling at them.  Zero recollection.  And there on Monday was the project, with all the displays in my writing and I had no memory whatsoever of producing any of it.  I even passed!  And the only drugs I was on were alcohol and caffeine in uncontrolled amounts, setting the scene for the forty years since...  Christ, I've wasted my life... We once moved house and there was legal problem over the exchange of contracts and exchange of keys on the very day of exchange. We were waiting for the internet to be connected (removal men, estate agent, us, all sitting around for  a connection so we could get things done). Suddenly the Estate Agent says, "We're connected" and my wife rang her friend to ask about what they were planning to do tomorrow and who should be getting dinner...
