The man had reportedly opened fire at the main gate to the Nellis Air Force Base around 80 miles from Groom Lake.
According to reports, the incident - which occurred at around 12.30am on Wednesday - began when the man approached the base and fired several rounds toward the main gate.

When security officers approached him, he then aimed his gun at them.

He ended up being shot in the leg before being taken to hospital for 'non life-threatening injuries'.

While investigations were being carried out, the main entrance was closed and an alternative entrance was opened to enable traffic to enter and exit the facility unimpeded.
It remains unclear why the man was there or why he had fired his gun at the gate.

Police have assured members of the public that there is no further threat.

Situated near Las Vegas, Nellis Air Force Base plays host to air combat training exercises and has also been linked to the development of government black projects and UFO lore.

It is around 80 miles from Area 51 which is itself part of the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR).

The whole region has been at the center of UFO-related conspiracy theories for decades.
