Retired general William Neil McCasland's disappearance has sparked rumors and speculation.
The 68-year-old, who retired from the US Air Force in 2013, vanished without a trace after last being seen on Friday night near Quail Run Court NE in Albuquerque.
According to his wife, he had left home without his phone or his watch - a fact that she found particularly odd as, being an experienced outdoorsman, this isn't something he would normally do.
He also suffers from a medical condition that makes his disappearance even more of a concern.
Authorities have since launched an investigation in the hope of tracking him down.
"Our priority is finding Mr McCasland safely," said Sheriff John Allen of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office.
"Our investigators and search teams are working continuously, and we're coordinating closely with our local, state, and federal partners."
Back during his US Air Force days, McCasland was often associated with the UFO phenomenon.
He once headed up the Air Force Research Laboratory at the Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Ohio where he managed a $2.2 billion science and technology program.
The base has long been associated with black projects and rumors of reverse-engineered alien technology and is also the place where the Roswell UFO debris was said to have been taken.
It was also connected to Project Blue Book which looked at thousands of UFO cases.
While it's unlikely that McCasland's disappearance has anything to do with any of that, it still remains a mystery exactly why he went out, where he went and ultimately what happened to him.
