An adventurous bird was recently filmed exploring the ocean floor in a remarkable, custom-built submersible.
Footage of the parakeet, named Bebe, went viral after its owner - Steven Lawyer - constructed a unique bird-sized submarine to enable it to explore underwater.
Built from a plastic container and a paintball air cylinder, the bizarre contraption carried its hapless avian passenger around 0.9 meters beneath the water's surface.
In the clip, the bird can be seen looking at the colorful coral scattered around the sea floor.
The device was piloted by way of a valve that Lawyer could use to control how much air went into the container, while weights kept it from floating straight back up to the surface.
There was even an oxygen meter so he could ensure that the bird had enough air.
Despite these features, however, the stunt attracted quite a bit of negative attention, with critics arguing that the bird would not have been happy to be trapped inside the device underwater.
"Bebe only went down about three feet, like you see in the video," said Lawyer. "He was only in this for about 15 minutes. He was fed and watered before he went in. He went in willingly."
"He likes doing these kinds of adventurous things with us."
"He was not stressed - we know what our bird looks like when he's stressed."
