Investigations at Gnandstein Castle have revealed the discovery of evidence pointing to alchemical practices.
For centuries, people have been obsessed with the idea of turning base metals into gold or of inventing an elixir capable of making anyone who drinks it immortal.
While these goals were never achieved, the practice of alchemy remains a fascinating subject as it was also responsible for many genuine medical discoveries and advances.
Now, archaeologists working at Germany's Gnandstein Castle have discovered vessels that were believed to have been used as part of various alchemical processes.
The finds include a tall green and yellow vessel thought to be some sort of distillation flask.
The researchers believe that the objects date back to the 15th or 16th centuries.
Sadly, it wasn't possible to determine what might have once been stored inside the vessels.
Exactly what alchemical experiments might have once been conducted within the castle's chambers continues to remain a topic of ongoing debate and intrigue.
