Bats can creep people out at the best of times - so imagine waking up to find one trying to get into your mouth.
This nightmarish scenario became unfortunate reality for gastroenterologist Dr Krista Edelman of Virginia who had been asleep in bed next to her husband at their home in Richmond at the time.
The first sign that something was amiss came when she began having a vivid dream in which she could sense that a "little mouse" had been trying to crawl into her mouth.
As she began to awaken, she realized that something really was trying to do exactly that.
It wasn't a mouse, however... it was a bat.
"In my dream I was reaching up to my mouth, and when I did, I grabbed something - ultimately I had folded the bat's wings," she recalled of the incident.
It's difficult to imagine the terror of waking up to something like this, but - ever the professional - Dr Edelman and her husband acted quickly to capture the bat so that it could be checked for rabies.
She also received precautionary shots while they awaited the results.
Fortunately, it turned out that the flying mammal was not infected.
The mental scars of the incident, however may take some time to heal.
