My haunted basement apartment

This story was submitted to the site by Robby from Washington DC.
My husband and I waited two months after our marriage to find our own home. It was a basement apartment across the street from a grave yard. It wouldn't have been my first or last choice but he picked it, and I was happy that we would finally be together to start our new life. It wasn't so bad until my husband was placed on a graveyard shift on his job. That left me home alone with only one other apartment in the basement, along with a laundry room. Great!

I always felt I was being watched. I can't explain it, but I never felt I was alone. It was as though invisible eyes were on me all the time. I hated that I had to stay in that apartment all by myself at night. Day time wasn't a picnic either. I come from a large family of six other siblings. I never had to be alone in my life. To top it off, the next door neighbor (a single man) was never ever home. I tolerated the feeling, but how can you tell your husband you never feel you are alone.

One night I was awakened by someone putting up dishes in my kitchen. Before going to bed, I washed the dishes but did not put them away in the cabinets. Something had decided to put them way for me. I laid in my bed trying to rationalize what I was hearing. No matter how I tried to deny it, something was trying to put away dishes in my cabinets. The sound was coming directly from the kitchen, and it would not stop. I was so afraid that I made myself go to sleep. Don't ask me how, but fear can make you do a lot of things. The next morning when I woke up I went straight into the kitchen. As you would know it, none of the dishes were touched.
Another incident happened years later in the same apartment. I was pregnant with our first child. My husband was home and I was cooking dinner. I think it was a weekend, because his night shift would eventually end, but not then. I was busy in the kitchen. I went to retrieve something from the refrigerator, and my blood ran cold. I knew right then and there that an entity had come through the front door. I froze in my tracks and screamed for my husband. He ran in from the bedroom, and I told him what I experienced. I asked him to pray with me, and we said the Lord's prayer out loud together. I slowly began to feel better. I know you may be thinking it was my hormones. I can tell you that it was not. My blood never ran cold like that before or after.

Another incident happened one night the lights went out. Yes I was home alone with no lights. A neighbor knocked on my door to see if I was okay and asked if I wanted to come to their apartment until the lights came back on. Since it was nighttime anyway, I declined and tried to go to sleep. Not long after I heard a sound from the living room that sounded as though someone or something had come in through the window because I heard the blinds move like a gush of wind had moved them. It wasn't even windy outside. I thought someone might have gotten in through the living room window and jumped up to inspect it. I moved through the dark with only the light from outside. Nothing was touched, and I went back to bed.

We eventually moved to a new home seven years after moving in. My husband's only experience was laying in the bed one day and feeling someone or something move the covers off of his feet. Only minor to what I dealt with. I don't know who is living there now, but I don't envy them. An elementary school was eventually built over the grave yard. Go figure.

I am so grateful for this site to be able to read stories and experiences from other kindred spirits. Like me I think people just want to share their experiences and know that others have gone through some of the same things. As we walk this earthly plane, we experience things that cannot be explained. It good to know you are not alone.

Thankyou so much for sharing your experience. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it with my eight year old. Although, I'm sure it wasn't an overall pleasant experience for you at all, it must be good to have a place to share your story with other like-minded people, whether believers or non-believers. Either way I find it interesting. Thankyou again!
