When I was young my parents would send my sister and I to Mexico with family for the summer. We loved it, our cousins babied us because we were the youngest and my aunts doted on me because I was the cutest. The first place in Mexico about an hour from the border, its spelled Control, it was a wonder of a town, barely that. It actually was located in the back of another town, with a single bridged road that went over this enormous lake. The lake was bordered by train tracks on the other side and then the town.
My aunt and uncle had eight boys and girls. They were working on a bed and breakfast that had ten rooms, most located on the second floor, which didn't have power yet. At night we stayed as far from there as possible. The first day there all my family would gather and we would have an epic fiesta, as the grown-ups drank the kids huddled in the back of an uncle's truck. We had blankets and pillows, comfort was not spared as we waited for Hector to spin his ghost story of the latest encounter he had experienced, this time he wasn't as animated as usual, he was in fact anxious. He kept looking at Chuey who hadn't said a word since we got in the truck not even welcoming us, I knew he had a crush on my sister.
We started bombarding them with questions, what's going on what happened, whats wrong? He insisted Chuey tell us but he wouldn't budge. Hector finally gave in, he started with the ominous warning and typical disclaimer ," your not going to believe us". A few months before we arrived at the entrance to the town there was a horrible accident where a four-year-old got hit by a car and died. His mother would let out these ear-piercing screams that she had to be sedated day and night. The only words she could muster "is where is my boy", you probably heard this one - "La Llorona" - the crying mom. But there was a small cross with dozens of stuffed toys there when we arrived.
Anyways, so Hector tells us that one night Chuey and he were riding there bikes when a car sped by them and they crashed into the small shrine by the side of the road. They freaked out, you have to remember folks this is a very superstitious town, let alone country. They quickly erected the cross upright and put the stuffed animals as close to it as possible, they didn't realize that there were two men in white scrub looking uniforms standing next to the mom of the dead boy. Hector said his heart dropped Chuey actually cowered behind him. Hector pulled Chuey to his bike and in a second raced out of there.
A few days later their troubles started. They heard through his mom that the lady had taken her own life because she couldn't bare to live the rest of her life without her only child. That same night Hector said when he went to sleep he could hear what sounded like heels walking down his hallway - they seemed to get louder and louder and it sounded like it would stop on the other side of the door. He didn't get any sleep and when Chuey came over the next day he also was sleep deprived. When Hector asked him what happened he became defensive, Hector just told him straight up what he heard that night. Chuey's brown skin turned gray. Hector tried to convince him it was nothing just coincidence. That night they planned to bring some flowers to the boys cross as a sign of respect. And they did just that. Hector and Chuey started looking around to see if something was out of the ordinary...nothing. "You see wey"! They jumped on Their bikes turned around and were about to peddle when they heard from somewhere across the lake a shriek, not a yell or a goal a shriek that would put and banshee to shame. They boys didn't even turn they just rode out of there as fast as their feet could spin those peddles.
My two cousins Hugo and Pepe, rubbished the story in their most sarcastic tone. They even said that there was no cross and dared Hector to show them. "Lets go"! Chuey was not having any part in it, so my cousins and Hector climb out of the truck, were about to head down to the end of the road when they turn to me," You coming?" "Hell no!" I quickly replied. Keep in mind I followed these two around like a lost puppy, they took care of me and always got me what I wanted, they also got me my first sling shot. So Pepe looks at me and asked again , "Coming?" I dropped my head and started climbing down the truck, we were on our way. A few minutes later we were at the end of the road, sure enough there was a small white cross, it was definitely dated and worn, it was almost had no more white paint on it." I never even heard about this kid! I stayed behind my cousins, I didn't even want to look at it and they noticed. "Come here" someone said, I just remember saying "no" and them teasing me, then Hugo started pushing me towards it, then to my hour I tripped landing right on top of it.
The three of them broke out in hysterics. I started crying, I was only eight. If my aunts and uncles hear me crying it was not going to be good for them. They picked me up off the floor and started cleaning me up still laughing their heads off and suddenly they stopped, not just laughing, talking moving. I looked at them and they where looking behind me where the lake was. I turned around and saw it, but I was confused, my brain was so terrified that it was telling my body not to even tremor a muscle. Across the lake on the railroad tracks was a woman, it was hard to make her out because she was wearing all black but it was definitely a woman and she was glaring right at us. How could this get any worse? It did, she let out a bone chilling yell, a shriek from hell. We finally were able to move, we tucked tail turned and fled back to the party. I couldn't believe my eyes when we got back to the truck everyone had left.
