Scientists are using the Large Hadron Collider to recreate the conditions following the Big Bang.
Its a state of matter that hasn't existed in the universe for almost 14 billion years but now scientists hope to recreate it here on Earth using the world's most powerful particle accelerator.
Scientists working on the most powerful particle accelerator in the world are on the verge of generating their own micro-Big Bangs in an effort to study a state of matter that hasn't existed in the Universe for 13. 75 billion years.

The evidence is mounting that we have entered a new phase in our history that may prove more dangerous to science than any before. Some call it 'half-term'...

didn't they already do this 2 years ago....

Right, so the LHC is "messing with forces we don't understand", yet you're happy to use a computer/microwave/light bulb.

They will create a simulation of the big bang. It will not be the big bang or anything like it. The fact is that we are doing an experiment that is part of the very thing being tested. Has the initial question that was posed and the reason this collier was built been answered? Part of science is "sticking to your guns" and completing what was initially asked. I am sure this will just be part of the answer because there has been so much money and effort put into this device it has to produce.

They were going to fire it on 2008, but there was a problem so they delayed it.

Um... the LHC has already run a collision, back in March. Last I checked... still here. Unless this is some sort of after image.

Um... the LHC has already run a collision, back in March. Last I checked... still here. Unless this is some sort of after image. Yes but those collisions were proton-proton collision. These collisions are lead nuclei - lead nuclei collisions! Everyone knows* lead pipes destroyed the Roman empire, just imagine what super relativistic lead can do! ----------- *It's a widely believed rumour, which is kinda like a fact.

If it's true that UFOs shut down our missiles then i guess they wont allow anything to happen to us :lol

The hype around the LHC is exactly why you should never believe science stories as reported in the mainstream press. They are almost always wrong. Collisions more powerful than we can achieve on earth are taking place over our heads right now, and have done every day since the earth had an atmosphere. There is a possibility that the LHC will create black holes, but they will be subatomic and will evaporate immediately. And as for recreating the big bang - what they are actually doing is recreating something called quark gluon plasma - a high energy state that existed just after the big bang. T... [More]
