Dark matter is thought to account for three-quarters of the matter in the universe but to date has never been directly observed. Now scientists are claiming a breakthrough discovery of actual dark matter in a mine half a mile underground.
For 80 years, it has eluded the finest minds in science. But tonight it appeared that the hunt may be over for dark matter, the mysterious and invisible substance that accounts for three-quarters of the matter in the universe.

Very exciting. Why not, Smugfish? Just asking...

Hmm, there seems to be a lot or articles with claims, but no actual proof or fact. Why announce to the world about something when you have nothing? It's as if their counting the eggs before the chicken actually laid them.

Wait, what? Why would they find this stuff underground in a cave other than in somewhere like... space? How exactly did they "find" it? I doubt they were looking for it there.

Great news! I don't hold out much hope for the LHC confirming supersymmetry though..just my opinion. I'm not sure about the LHC confirming supersymmetry.. after all, I've heard that Tom Hanks (Robert Langdon) got it restarted http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2009/dec/17/dark-matter-detected :alien: :alien: :alien: :alien: :alien: :alien:

Jw... the article said dark matter accounts for 75% of the matter in the universe and regular matter for 4%. What constitutes the remaining 21%?

Wait, what? Why would they find this stuff underground in a cave other than in somewhere like... space? How exactly did they "find" it? I doubt they were looking for it there. Because neutrinos pass through the Earth, and every single thing on it every second of the day. These particles are scanned by machines underground, to see if they've been interacting with dark matter; think of Dark matter as the ocean, and everything else the land.........or something like I described.....dark matter, and dark energy is still theory, unless these scientists prove it to be fact, and even then they could ... ..actually, maybe I don't even understand it myself lol, maybe this will help: http://esciencenews.com/articles/2009/09/25/prototype.developed.detect.dark.matter I used to have a really great article explaining stuff, but I forget the link.

Wait, what? Why would they find this stuff underground in a cave other than in somewhere like... space? How exactly did they "find" it? I doubt they were looking for it there. They are looking for small particles of matter that rarely interact with anything. If you looked at them through a telescope you wouldn't see anything because they, well, rarely interact with anything. They chose the mine for their experiment because they're not going to get a lot of interference down there. Their detectors are disks of semiconductors chilled to very close to absolute zero. You can read the exact technic... [More]

1 out of 4?? pretty good odds if you ask me. I wish Powerball was 1 out of 4... I'm calling shenanigans. They found their ass with one hand, the other hand came up short.

Heh, thanks. I was just kidding around, I figured there was a good reason it was in a cave, it's just one of those things that seems odd at first glance. When you think of Dark Matter, who thinks of a cave?
