Americans reached Europe 1000 years ago

Scientists believe Americans reached Europe over 500 years before Columbus reached America.
The research is based on studies of the genetic past of an Icelandic family the results of which suggest that a woman from the Americas reached Iceland almost 1000 years ago.
When Christopher Columbus paraded his newly discovered American Indians through the streets of Spanish towns at the end of the 15th century, he was not in fact introducing the first native Americans to Europe, according to new research.

I love how science was able to prove this through genetic testing. Very cool stuff.

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait...okay, so Columbus didn't discover America. Got that. But they think the Vikings did because they brought back some of the Natives to breed with??? Ummmmmmmm...*raises his hand*! Wouldn't that mean that the Natives discovered America? Hell-loooooow! *Yeeesh!*

Hell-loooooow! *Yeeesh!* Yeah, it is kind of tough to "discover" a place when there are people living there(for hundreds/thousands of years). It would be like me walking into someones house, planting a flag on their living room rug and then saying "I claim this land for Spain...do you mind if I use your restroom?"

You can use the restroom if I get to burn the flag. My home, my land. I think it's a question of which Europeans were the first to bring back the knowledge of America to Europe. That's what they mean by "discover." Even now we're still pretty much Eurocentric, otherwise we'd all be taking Native American his... [More]

Marco Polo and other European visitors to China saw maps of the Americas before Columbus, and these were brought back to Venice and other European cities. Of course, there was always a tendency to try to keep this information secret, but the Chinese, Japanese and Polynesians very likely explored the west coast of the Americas long before Columbus. I also think he did have some knowledge of "new lands" in the West, whether from Norse or Chinese sources or other information he gathered during his travels to Britain and Iceland. Maybe he did have one of the Viking maps.

ya but.. the topic is on People from the "Americas" possibly reaching Europe five centuries before Columbus came to islands near the Americas . (and then S. America itself) on his multiple voyages west. I still can't get over the arrogance of Europeans claiming inhabited lands.

America itself) on his multiple voyages west. I still can't get over the arrogance of Europeans claiming inhabited lands. They needed the resources for their own wars. They saw technologically inferior--or disunited--people holding onto land they could use. It was a no brainer for them. After all, there are how many European nations? Even if major enemies ceased fighting, others would take advantage of weakened nations. Not an excuse, just... [More]

Christopher Columbus never stepped one foot in North America. I can not believe that it is still taught in schools that he did. Good Grief!!!

The Chinese and the vikings were there first, and there are several medieval maps that depict Cuba.
