Douglas Smith has legally changed his name to Captain Awesome due to a joke in a TV series.
The 27-year-old successfuly applied to have his name changed after convincing a judge that having "Captain" as his forename was not intended for fraudulent reasons, the change is based on the character Dr Devon 'Captain Awesome' Woodcomb.
A man has changed his name from the relatively mundane Douglas Smith to the more explosive Captain Awesome - because of a 'really funny' joke on a TV show.

Anybody else think, "he needs to get a life?" I agree, this guy is not all there. The ball is moving, but the hamster is dead, if you know what I mean.

Well it sure could've been worse but what would the world be like if we couldn't laugh at people like this. --M--

There would be no way that I would change my surname to Awesome. Nothing goes with Awesome, seriously. I hope the Judge doesn't get razzed for changing the man's name to Captain Awesome. If I was Captain's sibling I would call him Douglas just to p*** him off.

There are much better names out there than Captain Awesome. Better to pick a normal-ish human name. If you're going for a cultural figure like from a tv show or book, there are far too many to choose from. Even cooler would be mixing them up. I mean, wouldn't you think it cool to be called Nathan Vorkosigan? (Combination of Nathan Brazil from the Wellworld novels and Miles Vorkosigan from Lois Bujold's universe.)

This is the kind of thing that people do and later come to really regret... like getting your lover's name tattooed on your arm. Someday he's going to wonder what the h*** he was thinking.
