Can we find trees on other planets ?

Two scientists have come up with a method to detect forests on extrasolar worlds.
Christopher Dougherty and Adam Wolf are working on the idea that a planet covered in trees might be detectable from the Earth because the shadowing on the surface would give it a different look. Referred to as the search for "Extra-Arboreal" life the method would require a much larger telescope than is currently available but could one day be used to locate abundant life on a distant world not much unlike our own.
If a tree casts a shadow in the woods, can anyone see it from light-years away? Considering that the best extrasolar planet pictures to date are dots in deep-space exposures, this question may sound ludicrous. But a pair of scientists thinks that detecting alien forests might be doable, at least in theory. Call it the search for Extra-Arboreal life.

Hey, good luck to them. Or maybe just build a similar device that can detect distant cities. After all, its intelligent life they're really looking for.

Anything is possible but in my opinion with this method there are just too many variables we can't accurately model(yet). Maybe if the algorithms were 1000x more complex with much more extensive datasets factoring in the way any possible combination of any number of different objects on a planets surface will react with light at any given time then this could be possible but I think there is just too much to consider...

I wish them well in their endeavours, I saw the 'Alien Planet' episode the article refers to and it was fascinating, this study would indeed yeild some equally fascinating results i'm sure. I have to say on the negative side, I am with #2, I just can't see how they can get around the complex variables, and the time needed gathering data from one planet would be great, so great as to prevent the project being viable. Especially considering the serious hardware they are going to need to run in order to carry this out, which won't be cheap seeing as we have nothing currently to carry out this rem... [More]

@electro13 No, the government/nasa/ect have no intersted in finding intellegent life - they'd rather find a primitive species that can't defend themselves. Its a lot easier to drain a planet of all its resources if the habitants don't know any better. Why do you guys want to find intellegent life anyway? I think Steven (or stephen?) hawking was right on the money when he said "remember the indians". Why do animals on earth migrate from one place to another? What happens when they do? Everything is a territory war - no reason to believe the cosmos would be any different.

I wonder what would be the logical next step if a planet was found containing trees? Would we look futher for animal life? Send a rover/satellite towards the location for a closer inspection? Both?

If such a thing was found it would be amazing. I seriously wish them all the best as I for one would love to see what a extrasolar tree would look like.

Id love to see a bio/archaeologocal mission sent to Mars. Im pretty sure they'd find some very interesting things. Maybe the Chinese could afford such a mission within the next 20-30 years. Or an international effort. My eyes would be glued to the tv

earth type trees, probable not. trees of some sort probable so. I was thinking the same thing, just because there are trees it's not likely to be like what we have here.
