Children to be taught atheism in schools

A number of schools are planning to introduce children as young as four to the concept of atheism.
While some schools have been criticised for forcing religion upon young children others are restructuring their religious studies syllabus to teach atheism in addition to all six of the major faiths. "We really must recognise that some people do not believe in God and do not have a religious background," says Fiona Moss who helped draft the new syllabus.
Youngsters will continue to learn about the six major faiths - Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism - but they will also be taught humanism, the belief that there is no God or Gods, and that moral values are founded on human nature and experience.

Sis, I agree with you the difference is minuscule.. As an Atheist myself , this definition would fit me. Interestingly, I tend to agree human nature is basically good, (just like a humanist.) Humanist: A secular ideology which espouses reason, ethics, and justice, whilst specifically rejecting supernatural and religious dogma as a basis of morality and decision-making.The last interpretation may be attributed to Secular Humanism as a specific humanistic life stance.[1] Modern meanings of the word have therefore come to be associated with a rejection of appeals to the supernatural or to some hi... Sis, I agree with you the difference is minuscule.. The difference between humanist and atheist is the same as the difference between humanist and theist. A humanist can be either an atheist or a theist (or agnostic). The term 'humanist' refers to someone holding a particular life-philosophy, while the terms 'atheist' and 'theist' refer to a belief held within that philosophy, and contributing to how it is practised. 'Atheism' and 'Theism' are not philosophies, but diametrically opposed beliefs about the existence of divinity. I accept that atheists might like to project atheism as a philosoph... [More]

@ Leo, Humanist: A secular ideology which espouses reason, ethics, and justice, whilst specifically rejecting supernatural and religious dogma as a basis of morality and decision-making.The last interpretation may be attributed to Secular Humanism as a specific humanistic life stance.[1] Modern meanings of the word have therefore come to be associated with a rejection of appeals to the supernatural or to some higher authority.[2][3] This interpretation may be directly contrasted with other prominent uses of the term in traditional religious circles.[4] Humanism of this strand arose from a traj... I dont see a problem with this. A school is a place to teach truths and facts. And the facts are there are no truths in religions that are verifiable.

Aye, plus indoctrination into religions often start even younger, so there's that. Considering the fact that childrens minds are more impressionable, it's important to introduce them to alternative views if you're gonna introduce them to any views of that sort.

All I can say is, good luck with teaching kids atheism at a young age, especially boys. They're so into superheroes like Marvel's Thor (mythological god), etc. That almost always leads to, "so dad, who can take Thor, since he's a god, there must be a bigger stronger God, right"? You can't say, "Yeah kid, there's no god, Thor's fake, along with Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and Easter Bunny", unless you want drama and tantrums for the next few years. Then your kid goes and tells the other kids that everything is fake, then fighting ensues, parents have to go to school and deal with BS, etc. Jus... [More]
