Diprotodon would have weighed around 3 tons and wandered Australia up to two million years ago.
A previously discovered bone fragment showed signs that the animals may have been hunted by humans as evidenced by a small hole thought to be from a spear and up until now no complete skeleton had ever been found. "We hope we will now be able to reconstruct the bones, put them into their original positions, to give us a pretty good idea of what these creatures looked like," said Professor Michael Archer of the Australian Museum.
Diprotodons were widespread across Australia when the first indigenous people arrived some 50,000 years ago from what is today South-East Asia. The heavily-built animals fed on grasses but they might not have been too intelligent - although having an oversized skull, it was filled with numerous air spaces.
