Bigger cars made for bigger drivers

Car manufacturers are producing bigger cars to accommodate the growingly obese population.
Over the last 10 years Honda has widened its seats by 2 inches and plans changes to buttons for those with "sausage fingers". Mercedes has strengthened its grab handles above the doors and Porsche is adding a feature which automatically raises the steering wheel when the engine is switched off. But are these necessary changes or are manufacturers taking things too far ?
Typical family cars have become more than a foot wider and almost double the weight over the past 50 years as manufacturers struggle with the world’s obesity crisis. Consequently some luxury manufacturers have begun road-testing the next generation of larger-sized vehicles. Officials say will allow bigger people to maintain their comfort on the road.

Yet airlines are finding new ways of packing 'em in like sardines Maybe it's going to be the new line for weight watcher... make the car loose weight at the same time as the customer

You know I never thought about it but maybe that's why SUV's are so popular now?

So much for the mid-size sedans. Bigger cars mean heavier cars. Heavier cars (especially with heavier people in them) mean degraded gas mileage. Degraded gas mileage means spending more money on gasoline. Spending more money on gasoline means more money in Big Oil Industry's pockets. This is obviously a conspiracy started by the Big Oil Companies funding American food companies to produce fattier foods.

Man, how large in size is their target population that they are anticipating? I'm over 6 foot and not a small guy but I drove a Geo Metro around town without any space problems and currently and comfortably drive a Storm which is not much bigger.

Ya know, this kind of thing can only go so far. They might build a wider car, but that can only get so wide before roads have to be widened too to accommodate those cars. I know the U.S. isn't blowing enough money on roads as it is already. I can't imagine how some European cities are supposed to widen the roads- start knocking down buildings? I also wonder how far this kind of trend can go before it's an endangerment to people that are not, er, big. Small people can slide back and forth on a big seat, and the seat belt does not restrain properly- that can be rather dangerous in an accident. S... [More]

Stop empowering obesity!! Maybe they should build wider police cars too. They (cops) can't chase down anyone anymore - they just shoot them.

I'm 6'4 and am glad they're headed this way, although it seems that the larger the vehicle, higher the price. Although I think this is only technology that is causing cars to become wider and have more space. With the right machines, were making more leg room and head room. The cars themselves are essentially the same size as earlier models from the 60s and 70s.

The market will satisfy the demands of the consumer. At least until Obama completely ruins it.
