In an ironic twist the £30 million supercomputer used by the Met Office to predict climate change is one of Britain's worst polluters, with 15 million megabytes of memory the machine uses enough energy to power 1,000 homes.
The Met Office has caused a storm of controversy after it was revealed their £30million supercomputer designed to predict climate change is one of Britain's worst polluters.

every one knows that is false were not saveing the planet were only trying to save ourselfs i like that, good point. That super computer struggles to get a two day forecast right. its a little better at 24 hour forecast.

Localized weather conditions and global climate trends are not the same thing, it's extremely naive to compare the two. For comparison, you might be able to predict the end result of the next football match that you see before the game even begins, but there's no way in hell you're going to predict where each and every player is for each minute of the game.

That's pretty crap! Especially as the forcasts can very often be incorrect too! i totally agree with you. it make you wonder why would anyone willing to pay so much (£30 million ) .

As the technology increases, the damage we are causing to our planet also increases... Especially technology in the fields of waste removal and alternative energy, amiright? That's pretty crap! Especially as the forcasts can very often be incorrect too! *Ahem* read: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn11649-climate-myths-we-cant-trust-computer-models.html I think this image does the computer simulations justice: every one knows that is false were not saveing the planet were only trying to save ourselfs The planet's a nice extra thrown in there, isn't it? That super computer struggles to get ... [More]

I love your logic here. Computer is bad at the extremely difficult task A, so that means it must be extremely bad at task B. I suppose the computer is also bad at math, because it's bad at predicting local forecasts with extreme accuracy? As shown above, Computer models of climate change have been largely shown to be accurate when tested on already... [More]

I never read the story right, I thought the computer was the one which does the local weather. not global climate change hence the reason for mentioning short forecasts IE two days and 24 hour. my... That energy use seems excessive. I bet they are using older technology. If they upgraded to top of the line Gigabyte memory devices, they could save probably 3/4 of that energy, but probably it would multiply the cost of the computer by 4 or 5. More efficient currently equals more costly. Is climate ch... [More]

every one knows that is false were not saveing the planet were only trying to save ourselfs you put it in a much more pessimistic view. it is in our best interest to save the planet because in turn it saves us! it's our home after all. if my home was on the verge of being destroyed by __(insert catastrophe)__ then i'd want to save it because i'd be pretty screwed without it
