Pentagon to breed "immortal" synthetic organisms

The Pentagon are looking to invest millions of dollars in to developing synthetic organisms in a new project called BioDesign.
The organisms would remove the "randomness of natural evolutionary advancement" and could be programmed not only to live forever but also to die when required through the use of a specially designed "kill switch".
The Pentagon’s mad science arm may have come up with its most radical project yet. Darpa is looking to re-write the laws of evolution to the military’s advantage, creating “synthetic organisms” that can live forever — or can be killed with the flick of a molecular switch.

ARE YOU ALL INSANE?! This is the problem with humans and this sheltered so- called civilization in which we are forced to live. IMMORTAL ORGANISMS?! How can any one of you support this after thinking of the long-term effects? You people think about yourselves - "oh, it would be cool if I could live forever". I, I, I. Me, me, me. What if Hitler lived forever? What if Osama or Sadam lived forever? This is a very bad idea. Not only that, but if they made a germ-warfare type agent that couldn't be killed off with antibiotics or antidotes, if it got out of hand, we'd have worse than an AIDS epidemi... [More]

I, I, I. Me, me, me. What if Hitler lived forever? What if Osama or Sadam lived forever? Well, we probably would have killed them just like we did. What if Albert Einstein lived forever?

DARPA is a rockin' crazy defense contractor, wanting to make immortal organisms, repair soldiers' bones in combat with starfish DNA for regeneration, all kinds of awesome and to some people, unthinkably unwise things. I have no problem with stem cell research, nor with these synthorgs, which could also eventually be used to create clones, I would imagine - immortal clones. Star Trek here we come - I remember that episode of Next Generation - or even Stargate's Asgard. Anyway, as noted by others, synthetic stuff could really turn the key for who knows what kind of discoveries to benefit man and... [More]

If people keep being afraid of the unknown and keep getting in science way because of paranoia we may as well be back in the dark ages, heck look at the fears over the collider. You've got a point, but at the same time, just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should be done.

You've got a point, but at the same time, just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should be done. I agree back in the 70's there was an article where the Goverment was mixing human DNA with saguaro cactus to be soldiers. Can you imagine? That was under Carter.

Immortality aye...? THAT WOULD BE AWSOME! All we have to do now is trade in our souls and flesh for metal bodies and horrific gause weapons and we become the NECRONS! I spy Xenos Filth that needs purging
