A new project by Centrica is aiming to turn ordinary human household waste in to renewable gas.
The process involves the sewage being broken down by bacteria and turned in to gas which can then be cleaned and piped back to people's homes. If the concept is successful then in the future a substantial percentage of gas supplies could come from recycled human waste.
A pilot project run by Centrica in a plant at Didcot sewage works, Oxfordshire, is the first in Britain to produce renewable gas from sewage for households to use. The waste is stored for 18 days and then turned into domestic gas which will supply about 200 homes with power.
