Petroglyphs on Alaskan islands reveal a spiritual side to Alutiiq whaling dominated by shamans.
On-going research being conducted by Kodiak Alaska native Sven Haakanson has revealed the dangerous and spiritual nature of whale hunting by ancient Alaskans. The shaman hunters worked alone against animals weighing several tons, their dead were often mummified so that their body fat could be harvested and used to enhance the power of the living hunters' lances.
Until the jet age, human survival in the unforgiving climate of the Gulf of Alaska’s islands was a matter of what sustenance could be drawn from the sea. Ongoing research into petroglyphs found on Kodiak Island’s rocky shores is adding to understanding of a fascinating whaling culture that was deeply spiritual, artistic—and practiced mummification.
