Entire reservoir drained after man pees in it

Over 8 million gallons of drinking water were drained after a man decided to use the lake as a toilet.
The operation to drain the lake is costing over $36,000 and has generated a substantial amount of criticism. "There are people who will say it's an over reaction. I don't think so. I think what you have to deal with here is the 'yuck' factor," said administrator David Shaff in defense of the decision.
The operation is costing the state's taxpayers $36,000 (£22,000) and was ordered after Joshua Seater, 21, was caught on a security camera relieving himself in the pristine lake. Health experts said the incident would not have caused any harm to people in the city of Portland, who are supplied with drinking water from the reservoir.

The 'yuck factor'? Really? We're in the middle of a water shortage, and they're getting upset over that? Not only would the water be getting filtered, and more of it probably going into pools and garden beds, but some places have been drinking recycled water for years, and they're fine. Also, as other people have said, the amount of animal crap that's in there as well as decomposing leaves and small animals, it just becomes even more ridiculous.

I'm not sure what your point is, it's obviously open to any bird to poop in, or bug to die in, I'm surprised no small rodents are using it as a watering hole... And you drink this water UN-filtered?... Agreed. It still is a mind boggling waste of time and resources.

It rained yesterday.

The river Severn in the UK is used as a source of drinking water by towns along almost its entire length. Treated waste water is returned to the same river by each of those towns. People in Bristol are drinking water that has been drunk and excreted at leat 8 times since it rose to the surface at the source at Seven Sisters.

Don't they filter and clean the water before bein distributed to the populace anyway. The urine would have been completely diluted even considering most of it is water anyway. Bear Grylls should come out and talk some sense into these people.

We still have plenty of water here. It rained yesterday. Just because it rained, doesn't mean that there's plenty of water. It's rained for 2 days, heavy rain too, but we don't have anywhere near enough water. It's a valuable resource, and there's no way to justify wasting it. If people are that squeamish about eating it (which I still say is stupid), then why couldn't they have pumped it to be used for agriculture and industry?

maybe they should have spent that money on a water treatment plant.leaves, dead fish and animal waste is ok but you drain the lake for one guy peeing in it? What a bunch of pansies. 'Yuck' factor? What about the rotting leaves and dead bugs and fish? Not to mention their crap? It is the stupidest reason to waste money. Don't they treat the water before allowing the public to use it? Who knows what other micro organisms are in the water their public uses. Stupid is as stupid does.
