A British defense company has developed a way to make tanks invisible in the infra-red spectrum.
The technology works via a series of cameras that film and project the infra-red signature of what's behind the tank on to the front. Not only does this conceal the vehicle from heat-seeking missiles and infra-red goggles in the dark but the system can be used to mimic the infra-red signature of other things such as animals.
The patented system — called Adaptiv — uses a matrix of hexagonal “pixels” that can change their temperature very rapidly. On-board cameras sweep the area to pick up the background scenery and display that infra-red signature on the vehicle.
