In a new medical experiment a duck has been able to father a chicken following a special procedure.
The remarkable 'Turducken' was created at the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai when scientists injected a chicken's germ cells in to the reproductive organs of a male duck embryo. Once the duck had fully grown it was able to produce the sperm cells of a chicken, a first for science.
While the project is initially aimed towards producing more fertile hens, it is hoped that the technique could eventually be used to allow hens to produce eggs belonging to rare, endangered or even extinct species of birds.
The ultimate goal is to ”use this system to propagate endangered species or potentially bring back an extinct one,” according to a recent TEDx talk by Mike McGrew.
