Radio spoof causes 'alien invasion' panic

A radio station got more than it bargained for when a promotional invasion spoof got out of control.
To help promote a planned change to their schedule, Alabama radio station Star 94.9 decided it would be a good idea to air a warning that extraterrestrials were invading the Earth. Incredibly, a significant number of its listeners ended up taking the report seriously, leading to a bizarre series of events that mirrored a similar incident in 1938 when a radio rendition of HG Wells' War of the Worlds was mistaken for a genuine invasion.
Residents across the town of Tuscumbia in Alabama started to make frantic calls to the radio station and to local authorities in fear that the end of the world was at hand. As the situation escalated events took an even more sinister turn in the form of a bomb threat at a local school.

"We certainly apologize, but we had no intention to cause any problems or create concerns about schools," said Regional director of Shoals Radio, Brian Rickman. "We are truly taken back by how out of context this has been taken. We could not have foreseen this happening."

What an embarrassing display of stupidity. I don't see why the radio station had to apologize, they didn't really do anything wrong. There are so many ways those people could have check the validity of what they heard. Check the other stations, how could only ONE radio station be reporting such epic news. Check the tv, the internet, go outside and look up! For crying out loud, THINK, QUESTION, USE YOUR BRAIN.

The problem just maybe that for a long time now American/British kids have been subject to all kinds of Alien News,Stories.Films & the Press for a long time, so its like "crying wolf",you have a good laugh until one day some one shouts Its the Aliens they're here, everyone has a laugh until they see an Alien Space ship zapping a city on the news, then they think its a film, and then me dears its TOO LATE.

If they have the ability to travel past light speed and travel that far in the vaccume of space, we could have 100 years warning and it wouldn't matter. If they show up we're dead already, so its best to go on not worrying about it
