What is the Pentagon's $55 billion plane ?

The bleeding edge bomber remains shrouded in secrecy and its costs may be spiraling out of control.
It's one of the Air Force's most top secret projects and despite being hinted at in a recent Super Bowl commercial, the new US bomber continues to remain firmly under wraps.

Very little information about the project has been released to the public so far, but what we do know is that it will be a long range aircraft capable of striking anywhere on the planet. It can be flown manned or unmanned and the initial production run of up to one hundred planes will cost somewhere in the region of $55 billion.

With the level of technology being employed in the project however and given the Pentagon's tendency to underestimate how much things will cost there have been growing concerns that these new bombers are going to be significantly more expensive than the quoted estimate.
"I'm afraid they're heading down a path here where they have set themselves up politically to not succeed," said defense budget expert Todd Harrison. "They've come out with these cost estimates that are surprisingly low, and they seem to be doubling down on the idea that they can build this bomber cheaper than the last one."

The Air Force is expected to award a contract for the new aircraft within the next few months with the intention of having the planes operational by the mid-2020s.

Whether they will be able to do it within the $55 billion budget however remains to be seen.

Retrofit some Blackbirds that are in retirement...keep the Stealth fighters and bombers...and expand on the drone tech of today and you can pretty much control the planet. Unless these new planes can fight in outer-space too, I say it's a scam to hide billions in other spending.

Uh, what's wrong with the B1 and B2 Bombers? They must've been made obsolete by the U.S's eternal enemy, England.

One thing I can say for certain given my background and clearances. If the military is releasing ANY information about a project, it is already 15+ years old and out dated by more than 50 years due to the exponential rate of technological advancement . Once one knows the mind of the Intelligence community they realize that there isn't a thing released to the public that hasn't already been in use for a bare minimum of 15 years. That's part of their "game."

When it finally lost enough power to fly, and crash-landed, the engine would have a good chance of spe... [More]

And some people still believe that to accuse senior figures in the US Military of being deranged Dr Strangelovian fanatics is unfair and offensive. Surely it is one of the great tragedies of the 20th century that such scientific effort, such imagination and design skill and such manufacturing effort has been almost entirely devoted to the design of ever more deranged doomsday weapons. Perhaps that's one reason as well as the usually quoted one of governmental parsimony that we have never got further than that giant leap for mankind; because it's always been the Military that has had almost exc... * Thinking about it, on a sort of side note, such ideas as this (Of course, testing an unmanned, unshielded nuclear reactor was tricky as well, since any tests originating in Nevada could have easily put Vegas or Los Angeles in harm's way, and most proposals (like a really huge tether) to keep things under control seemed pretty inadequate.) do sound rather reminiscent of some of the more interesting (i.e. some of those with irrefutable physical evidence) UFO encounters, like the Huffman, Texas incident in December 1980...
