A man in Detroit managed to set a gas station on fire while trying to use his lighter to kill a spider.
The absurd scenario saw the hapless arachnophobe grab his cigarette lighter after encountering a large spider that had decided to pay him a visit while he was filling his car up with gas.
Without thinking things through he attempted to use the gadget to douse the arachnid in flames but ended up setting the gas pump alight instead. The fire soon engulfed the entire pump, forcing the attendant to hit the gas automatic stop button before phoning for the fire brigade.
Fortunately the man managed to put the flames out himself by grabbing a nearby fire extinguisher.
"He was sorry," said the attendant. "It is just one of those things that happen - stupidity."
While I can't condone the idiocy of destroying a gas pump like that, I do heartily endorse the use of fire, and lots of it, to kill spiders. Or, just nuke them from orbit. I think we should just up and accept them. Most spiders are really harmless and we live with them anyway (yes, the 10 feet thing is real). Heresy. It's either us or them.
Holy flaming Spider! You often hear people joke about what lengths they would go to in order to win a battle against a spider but this is a bit much! Heck the lady who realized she was driving down the road with a copperhead snake in her car was able to not have a complete meltdown! If I remember correctly it slithered down the inside of her driver's side window! EEEK!!!
