New 'Vertical Walking' could replace stairs

A team of designers from the Netherlands have somehow managed to reinvent the humble staircase.
The novel new invention looks like a cross between stairs and an elevator and enables a user to shimmy up a vertical shaft with minimal effort using nothing more than their arms and legs.

Named 'Vertical Walking', the contraption has the potential to be a big space saver in densely populated cities and could even prove to be a good way to encourage more exercise.
It works using a clever combination of springs, elastic ropes and a pulley system.

Those who live on the top floor of a skyscraper however might want to stick to using the elevator.

Yes - but with the elevator you don't get the exercise.  This would help the arms and legs. My Dad always had this to say about a bicycle "Pedal like hell to give your a$$ a rest."

So I assume Grandma or toddlers would just never go to the second floor? Silly idea IMO.

First thing that came to mind was elevator shaft. I also suppose this device would work to ascend vertically up a secret passage inside a wall space. I don't see this device as practical because mechanical parts would need replacement. Stairs are more reliable in that sense.

That'd be tremendous fun, falling down through the hole in the upper floor when you're p***ed.

Anyway, it's not exactly new is it. Climbers and riggers have been using more or less the same thing for years. All this lot have done is get a wooden seat from Ikea to replace the canvas sling, and replaced the rope with a couple of poles.
