A man in Edinburgh got the fright of his life on Tuesday when he found the reptile in his shopping.
The snake, which has been nicknamed 'Ricky' in homage to the fact that it came from Costa Rica, was found clinging to a pineapple inside a bag of groceries bought from Aldi.

"It's not every day that we get called out to attend to snakes found in peculiar places," said Catherine Atterton of the Scottish SPCA ( Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ).

"I know not long ago there was a wee lizard found on a head of broccoli so I was quite excited to see what had stowed away on this pineapple. As yet he's not been identified but he's in a good condition and is now being cared for by experts at Butterfly World in Edinburgh."
"We're glad we were called out as without proper care Ricky wouldn't survive our climate. Now he'll be able to recuperate from his adventures."

The supermarket from which the pineapple was purchased was similarly surprised by the discovery.

"We are investigating this isolated incident with our supplier to understand how this could have happened," said a spokeswoman.

It could have been worse. It could have been a spider on a bunch of bananas.

I think the experts have identified it now....it belongs to the macrolepidopteran clade Rhopalocera from the order Lepidoptera, but tests are still being done.
