Police apprehend 'plague doctor' in Scotland

A man dressed in plague doctor attire has been seen hanging around various towns in the Falkirk area.
The mysterious individual, who looks like someone off the set of a 17th-Century period drama, has been sighted several times over the last couple of weeks in the Central Lowlands of Scotland.

The eerie attire, which consists of black robes, a black hat and a pointed beak-like face mask filled with aromatic items, was widely used by doctors to treat infected patients during the bubonic plague as it was thought to act as a filter against the 'putrid air' responsible for causing the disease.

The costume came to be feared during outbreaks as it was perceived as a sign of imminent death.

Local parents became particularly concerned when the unidentified plague doctor started showing up outside a school, prompting calls to the police.

Officials later confirmed that they had tracked down and spoken to the man.
"We are aware of reports made to police and online about a person dressed in 'plague doctor' clothing," said a police spokesperson.

"We have identified the male youth who was seen and he has been visited by officers who have offered appropriate advice to him."

"We have no reports of any criminal activity and officers have been out in the community providing reassurance, including speaking at schools in the area."

The incident follows on from sightings of a different individual dressed as a plague doctor who was seen hanging around the town of Hellesdon, England back in April 2020.

He had also received a word of caution from the police over his questionable choice of costume.

He hasn't done anything wrong, that is why the Police never arrested him and instead offered him advice. The advice was probably as much about intimidating young children near schools and his own protection and safety from how others may react to him walking around near places like schools where vulnerable people are.

For hanging around schools looking creepy. All it takes is for one person to yell, "He's a paedo!" and the guy would be at severe risk of being beaten senseless.

I never understand why police investigate these instances where no crime has been committed and noone harmed in any way

Ruin has come to our family. You remember our venerable house, opulent and imperial, gazing proudly from its stoic perch above the moor. I lived all my years in that ancient rumor-shadowed manor, fattened by decadence and luxury. And yet, I began to tire of... conventional extravagance. Singular unsettling tales suggested the mansion itself was a gateway to some fabulous and unnameable power. With relic and ritual, I bent every effort towards the excavation and recovery of those long buried secrets, exhausting what remained of our family fortune on... swarthy workmen and... sturdy shovels. At... [More]

'Cuz they're bored and probably feel the need to harass someone to make themselves look important. I think the costume was kinda cool myself. Never get to see a good Plague Doctor roaming around anymore
