Several Mid-Atlantic states on the East Coast saw reports of a dust-like powder falling from the sky last week.
Concerns were raised on Thursday when residents of Maryland, northern Virginia and West Virginia began reporting that a strange powder had started settling on top of their vehicles.

So numerous were the reports that the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection decided to launch its own investigation into the phenomenon.

One of its main goals was to determine if the powder could be dust from storms in Texas and New Mexico that later traveled east into Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky.

Not everyone is convinced that this explanation holds up, however, with some blaming a release of toxic chemicals from a train derailment in Eastern Ohio and others maintaining that the powder had been dropped by an overflying airplane.
Authorities have moved to dismiss such claims, leading to a number of conspiracy theories circulating social media and a general need for a more definitive, concrete explanation.

As things stand, officials have downplayed any need for concern and there is so far no evidence to suggest that the powder is toxic or dangerous in any way.

Even so, this is one mystery that authorities will be keen to resolve as quickly as possible.

Occasionally, when the winds are strong enough and in the right direction, we get dust from the sands of the Sahara here in the U.K.

After the reports emerged, residents were encouraged to stay inside. However, after it was discovered that the substance didn’t appear harmful, people began scraping it off their belongings. Some residents stated that the “dust sediment” was sticky and left milky hues on their cars as they attempted to clean i... [More]

I witnessed myself a very similar strange phenomenon which none of us do remember. The last year, in the first days of May in the area where I live (near the Krasnoyarsk city, Siberia) there came a very strong southern wind which brought with itself enormous amounts of absolutely while fine grained sand. The dust was everywhere, on every window still despite closed windows, and I could not walk outside of my house because of the stinging sensation in the eyes. The wind caused lots of uncontrollable fires in Khakassia (the region to the south of us) and also to the east, where lots of people ha... [More]

I would think that there should be an explanation very soon today.  How hard would it be to run a test?

Same described dust fell in Farmington New Mexico, seeing it all over my vehicle and not easily washed off at the car wash. I originally scoffed it off as dust from Arizona and California since we are downwind from those areas. A whitish-slightly brown dust, stirred up by heavy winds that created blizzards and continuing in an eastward direction. there is some residual dirt on my vehicle, will scrape off for further study.
