Strange green 'slime' emerges from manhole covers in New York City

The bizarre scene looked like something out of an episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
When Dan Pantelo recently spotted a strange green substance oozing out from beneath manhole covers outside the World Trade Center in New York City, he didn't know if he needed to call for a plumber or the Ghostbusters.

Grabbing his phone, he captured an image and posted it up on social media.

Before long, his picture had ended up on the front page of the New York Post.

While many users offered their own tongue-in-cheek suggestions as to what was going on, the reality of the situation inevitably turned out to be somewhat mundane.
The 'slime' was in fact water filled with green dye used by plumbers to detect leaks.

Exactly why it was bubbling out onto the street like that remains unclear, but it definitely wasn't radioactive waste and Gozer the Gozerian isn't about to make a triumphant return anytime soon.

"Contrary to the community note, I think the sludge is radioactive ooze," Pantelo joked.

"Source? Divine intuition."
