Workers discover three human skulls while laying foundation for new home

The grisly discovery was made by construction crews working at a building site in Narrumson Road, New Jersey.
The find, which was made on Tuesday, consists of what are thought to be the skulls and skeletal remains of three people who had been interred beneath a property at the site.

It was pretty clear from the outset that what the crew had found were human remains.

"We were digging for a new foundation and we encountered actually three skulls and a lot of bones," said paving company owner Bob Wiley, who also noted that one skull was smaller than the others.

It appeared from the proximity of the remains that the skeletons had been buried together.

The building site was promptly shut down so that police officers could conduct an investigation.
Since then, speculation has been rife over who the mysterious victims could be.

Some have suggested that the workers may have found a Native American burial ground, while others have put forward the possibility that the skeletons are those of a serial killer's victims.

Others, again, maintain that the discovery could be some sort of family burial plot.

It will be critical for authorities to first determine if the deaths were recent or historical.

"It would be immensely improper for our office or the Wall Township Police Department to provide further information or details at this time, given the need for further forensic analysis," said Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.

The Unami didn't have burial grounds. Your bones either went into a ossuary mound or buried with other family under the wigwam during the Feast of the Dead. Unami Lenape farmette sites were "burial grounds" because of this. It also could be settlers, slaves or a serial killer as suggested. I wouldn't know unless I saw the layout of the bones and the teeth. I once recorded most of the lost private colonial and 19th century cemeteries in Gloucester County and I'm surprised construction doesn't hit more of them in New Jersey. The Wood family, The Quakers who owns Wawa and one of the last prime... [More]

I love lost and forgotten history. I bet researching those vanished cemeteries was fascinating. Do you have any sources on those you could recommend?

Old farm surveys and deeds. Stories from the elderly. The family plot was always included in the survey or deed.
