Sometimes even star power isn't enough to sell a house that has a paranormal reputation.
Lock House - a sprawling Grade II-listed mansion nestled in the West Sussex countryside - would seem to be an ideal purchase for anyone with deep enough pockets.
But it was the words of one of its former inhabitants - the singer Adele - that may have doomed it to being redeveloped due to the difficulties the current owner has experienced trying to find a buyer.
For some time now, the world-famous singer-songwriter has hinted that the property is haunted.
During an interview with
CBS in 2012, she stated that it was "quite scary" and it has also ended up featured on lists of celebrity haunted homes.
This might seem harmless enough, but now the building has become practically unsellable because nobody seems to want to buy a house that is rumored to be haunted.
The plan now is to convert the building into three separate houses and a cottage.
"[Adele] blighted the property saying it is haunted," the home's planning statement reads.
"The applicant has actively tried to sell the property for about 14 years. Despite the property being consistently marketed by top agents, no offers have been forthcoming."
"The only offer received over the years was in August 2020, but the prospective buyer withdrew after learning about the property's supposed haunted status."
