Giant creepy 'alien' face discovered in Antarctica on Google Earth

A satellite image covering part of the desolate Antarctic wastes shows a feature that looks deceptively like a face.
From the entrance of a secret base to the silhouette of a giant sea monster - amateur Google Earth sleuths have found all sorts of strange and unusual features in some of the world's remotest places.

This latest example, which was recently discovered and posted up on Reddit, shows a bizarre alien-like face complete with a large nose, two closed eyes and a small, slit-like mouth.

You can find it for yourself on Google Maps at 72°00'36.0"S 168°34'40.0"E.
Of course this isn't actually a face but an example of pareidolia - the brain's innate tendency to perceive meaningful shapes in otherwise abstract patterns.

It's the same phenomenon that enables us to see familiar shapes in clouds and it is also responsible for the discovery of various weird and wacky anomalies on the surface of Mars.

The Antarctic face is certainly not the first such example and no doubt it won't be the last.

It doesn't say how big it is in the article. That is one heck of a coincidence for something natural to look like that. Same with the 'face'and 'town' on Mars at Cydonia. Coincidence? Who knows but it's very interesting.

'Of course this isn't actually a face but an example of pareidolia'. The author should not be so subjective. Who says it's not a face? Noone knows, so everything would be speculation, a subjective hunch. Journalists shouldn't write like that, it's annoying.

Right. I feel like the decision that it's nothing should have at least been accompanied by more of an investigation. Not even another pic of the area? Nothing? Who knows what's thawing out down there.
