What exactly is this ? Image Credit: Google Earth
An image of a strangely black and featureless anomaly captured on Google Earth has been gaining renewed attention this week.
Photographed by satellite in the middle of the expansive waters of the Pacific Ocean in 2021, this perplexing oddity has been doing the rounds again on social media recently.
Resembling a pitch-black triangular formation miles from anywhere, the phenomenon has sparked various conspiracy theories about spacetime anomalies, secret projects and even alien visitors.
Some even suggested that it was a large opening into the bowels of the Earth.
As it turns out, however, this peculiar feature is little more than an optical illusion.
What it actually shows is an island that is completely covered with trees which happen to be so densely packed together that they appear as a single black shape on the satellite image.
Known as Vostok Island, this small land mass is one of 33 that make up the Republic of Kiribati in the South Pacific approximately 4,000 miles from the coast of Australia.
In total, the island covers a mere 0.1 square miles.
