Viral 'dancing manhole covers' clip sparks concern in New Orleans

Something is stirring beneath New Orleans. Image Credit: X / @dom_lucre Seeing manhole covers rising up and jiggling about might seem like an amusing novelty, but for residents of New Orleans, the phenomenon has been met with concern and trepidation.

The reason for this is that a similar event occurred during Hurricane Katrina, when manhole covers were lifted into the air due to catastrophic flooding that caused immeasurable devastation, leaving more than 1,400 people dead and 300,000 homes destroyed.

The new clip, which has been viewed over 7 million times, is accompanied by the text:

"Those old New Orleans spirits were making the manhole covers dance!"

In reality, the moving manhole covers don't necessarily mean that there is a major flood - in some cases heavy rain on its own can cause hydraulic pressure to build up in the drainage system.Even so, some locals believe that the phenomenon is a warning.

"In our culture, we believe nature gives us signs," resident Marie Johnson told HypeFresh.

"These videos remind me of stories my grandparents used to tell."
