Woman fined after transporting a pony in the back of her car

The bizarre incident happened in Germany where the vehicle was pulled over by police who spotted the animal in the back.
We've heard about some strange things on the roads over the years, from alien mannequins in the passenger seat to a man who claimed that his erratic driving was down to the fact that he had been teaching his dog (who was sat on his lap) how to control the car.

This latest bizarre story comes from Alsdorf, Germany where a woman in a pink car was stopped by police after it was found that she was transporting a pony in the back of it.

She had folded down the back seats to make room and had covered the floor with straw, while the animal itself was chained to a metal ring to stop it moving around too much.
Officers argued that the situation was fundamentally unsafe, not just for the pony but also for the woman and other drivers as the animal was quite heavy and could have caused an accident.

Even transporting a dog in this way would be considered inappropriate.

In the end, the woman refused to co-operate with officers and wouldn't pay the 35 Euro fine.

As a result, she will now likely face an even steeper penalty for her actions.

My mom used to transport our mule in the back of the van where it would look out the back window.   She usually had 4 or 5 kids and 3 dogs in the van as well.  It was no less safe than putting her in a trailer and she didn't get lonely like she would in a trailer.   The mule was a cross between a medium sized white donkey and a shetland poney, so not as big as a regular mule.

I don't know what the seat belt laws are in the UK, in the U.S. they only apply to people.   Sometimes I think I should get some seat belt contraptions for the dogs though, one likes to hang over my shoulder and tell me how to drive.

in Portugal even animals have to he sort of restraint, like in a carrier box or trailer for animals.

U.K. seat belt laws are indeed for people, but dogs should not be unrestrained. We use a tether attached to the dogs harness as she sits on a back seat. Also a ‘sling’ on that side of the seat so she can’t fall into the foot well. Other people restrain their pets in the rear part of hatchback cars the same way or crate them, or use grills to stop the animal getting through to the driver. Pets on laps are deeply frowned on if the lap is that of the driver!

My dad used to let his jack russel terrier ride in his lap when he drove.   Once I was in the car with him and made the dog sit in my lap.   She was fine with that but he go angry.
