A demonstration of the Xpeng IRON humanoid robot recently left people unable to believe that it was even a robot.
Developed by a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, the robot - an autonomous bipedal humanoid - is being positioned as a direct competitor to Tesla's Optimus.
It was demonstrated recently at the company's AI Day in Guangzhou where audiences got the chance to observe its incredibly life-like walking motion first-hand.
Unexpectedly, however, its movements proved so realistic that many people questioned whether it was even a robot at all, instead accusing the firm of rolling out a human wearing a robot suit instead of an actual working machine.
Keen to shut down such rumors, the firm made the decision to bring the robot back out onto the stage and cut it open in front of a live audience to prove that it was genuinely a robot.
According to Xpeng, the robot's incredibly fluent walking motion is down to its unique AI which enables it to physically react to its surroundings.
It is also covered in a tight synthetic 'skin' that makes it appear more organic and which covers up its assembly of artificial muscles, flexible bones and a synthetic spine.
Overall, it is capable of 2,250 trillion operations per second.
"In the future, robots will be life partners and colleagues," said the firm's CEO He Xiaopeng.
"I suspect that, just like when you buy a car, you can choose different colours, exteriors, and interiors. In the future, when you buy a robot, you can choose the sex, hair length, or clothing for your desired purpose."
