The UFO Phenomenon

60 years on, the Kecksburg UFO mystery continues to intrigue

On December 9th, 1965, the woods near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania became the center of an iconic UFO enigma.
The strangeness began when thousands of witnesses across six US states and parts of Canada observed a peculiar fireball that dropped "hot metal debris" as it blazed through the heavens.

Despite the sightings being fairly widespread, however, it was the small town of Kecksburg in Pennsylvania that would become most closely associated with the incident.

It started when a young local boy claimed to have seen the object come down in the woods near his home and his mother later reported it to the authorities when she saw strange blue wisps rising from the trees.

Several locals, including members of the fire department, went out to investigate the scene and found an odd acorn-shaped object the size of a small car with strange writing on its surface.

Within a short space of time there were reports of an intense military presence at the crash site with army officials ordering civilians away from the scene while the object was being loaded onto a truck.
The incident was later played down as nothing more than a meteor impact, however many people still believe that the military had been covering up something a lot more significant.

In 2005, NASA claimed that an analysis of fragments retrieved from the site had identified them to be parts of a Soviet satellite, but official records concerning the find had been lost in the 1980s.

Investigative journalist Leslie Kean even sued NASA under the Freedom of Information Act and while the space agency was ultimately ordered to search for the records, their whereabouts were never determined.

Some believe that the documents were hidden or destroyed as part of a cover-up, while others believe that it was more likely to be the US Air Force, not NASA, that had possession of the files.

Whatever the case, no definitive explanation for the incident has ever been forthcoming.

It sure does fit too good, looks just like the prop unsolved mysteries made for their episode on this case.

AFAIK only bullybush ( spelling ) made claims of any kind of appearance of controlled flight, he's the one who claimed to have put his kid in the car and went looking for it.

I'm surprised it took me this long to find this explanation, but it fits right. Can't say I've heard of Stan Gordon before, but I guess I can understand that if you've spent a lifetime convinced of something, it wouldn't be easy to do a 180

Apparently these reentry vehicles can make turns and change their rate of descent, so still seems more credible than anything alien ? ?  I'd not heard of them before, the docslib pdf has a few pictures, I'm convinced

Seems I had railed about Gordon in my original post on this thread so deleted it from this reply but it still stands, Gordon was too snotty arrogant for my taste, like meldrum was with Bigfoot, I actually hoped some of those old bf hunters like Byrne might see the mythical beast.

This case while different always reminds me in feel to the shag harbor case.

I've just read the wiki article, has the Shag Harbor sighting ever had an explanation? It sounds as though something was definitely sighted so I'd imagine there's a reasonable explanation

Imnsho shag harbor has not been explained in a way that I personally can take it past "mystery" no, I'm not jumping to aliens either, One issue I do have with these old cases is some claim will be presented as fact yet it's really not, it's opinion with nothing to support it and these type things varies with each article on the event,  Shag harbor didn't really get the mushrooms roswell did, very few making ridiculous claims to gain attention and or profit, of course they do cash in with ufo festivals there but that doesn't mean nothing happened. What was it? Your guess is as good as mine.

I think that with current knowledge of what kind of stuff was being launched into orbit 60 years ago, like the re-entry vehicles, a few old cases could get cleared up

I agree, at least in cases that weren't just made up to start with.
