The object, that had somehow ended up in a very unfortunate place, had left the man in 'extreme discomfort'.
In what could be one of the strangest stories we've featured in a long time, reports out of France this week have told of the case of a man who went to Rangueil Hospital in Toulouse complaining of significant discomfort caused by a foreign object inserted up his rear-end.
Keen to help the man, doctors performed a procedure to remove the object, but when they extracted it, they discovered to their horror that it was in fact a World War I era artillery shell.
To make matters worse, the shell - which measured 20cm in length - appeared to be unexploded.
What followed was an evacuation of the building, while bomb disposal experts set up a security perimeter so that the device could be properly assessed.
Fortunately, it turned out to be inert and did not pose any risk to the public.
Questions have since been raised over exactly how the ordnance had ended up in such an unfortunate place and how the man had come to have the shell to begin with.
It is thought that he could now face charges for possessing "category A munitions".
Whatever the legal consequences, however, it can't possibly be worse than having the thing lodged inside his posterior.
