New project to simulate the whole world

The Living Earth Simulator (LES) is being developed to simulate everything that is happening on Earth.
The ambitious project will be powered by a series of supercomputers and hopes to simulate all manner of things from the spread of diseases to weather patterns in order to help scientists better understand what is happening on the planet.
An international group of scientists are aiming to create a simulator that can replicate everything happening on Earth - from global weather patterns and the spread of diseases to international financial transactions or congestion on Milton Keynes' roads.

yeah...not so sure that the technology is up to par yet if this simulation is to be fast and accurate

In theory, if a computer could replicate EXACTLY what's happening on the Earth then, using sophisticated mathematics, it should be able to calculate what WILL happen, on the Earth. A sort of 'window into the future' if you will. Actually, in theory that is not the case, due to the uncertainty principle.

Stellar said, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_theory Also, chaos theory would have to be taken into account. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_theory

Seems a bit premature to build a functioning simulator for this purpose. Seeing as we don't understand everything, everything cannot be emulated. It's a good start on a framework they can continually add new discoveries to though.

I believe there are precursors to any event, because I think that we are all pretty much on-going physics from the big bang (including concienceness)... but by analyzing this amount of varied real-world data, we should at the very least be able to start seeing if these precursors are present or not, if they are, like i think they are (not a complete athiest ), then we may be able to start predict future events. Or if it fails... we get "The Sims3: You in the Matrix"

Sounds like a game to me. Really hard to emulate Earth when we cannot even understand ourselves.

Absolutely a Narcissist idea. Man cannot simulate that which he does not understand. Man is so arrogant and ego driven that he thinks he can control when all he can really do is observe, and he is not even good at that.

Well, some of the greatest minds on the planet used to think the Earth was flat, so you just never know. As man continues to devalop, so will his/her technology. IF, a machine could be devaloped to accurately predict say, environmental or economic outcomes, this could have great value. In the right hands.
